Inner Old Town (old part of town), quarter in the administrative district Ortsamt Altstadt, identical to the "statistic quarter" 01 Innere Altstadt (Inner Old Town) and part of the boundary Altstadt I, cover the entire area of the city Dresden on the left side of the river "Elbe" in its expansion until approximately 1800.

History
The Inner Old Town is the oldest quarter of the city Dresden. It encloses the surface of the medieval and earlymodern city until approximately 1800 and the in 1206 for the first time mentioned German town foundation southwest of the line "Schloßplatz - Gewandhaus" as well as the slavic village around the church Frauenkirche. This settlement lays outside of the city walls and streches until the new building of the fortress(1519-1529).

The history of the Inner Old Town and the Inner New Town is the history of the City of Dresden until approximately 1815.

During the destruction of Dresden (Zerstörung Dresdens) on the 13th of February 1945 the inner Old Town with its many cultural buildings was the most heavily affected quarter.

Starting from 1953 the reconstruction work begun first increasingly at the old market (Altmarkt) area in neo baroque style, later on the Ring and in the road formerly called
Ernst-Thälmann-Straße with the front design becoming increasingly simple. After a long reconstruction break more buildings and developments were added to the quarter in the second half of the 1990's around the roads Seestraße and Webergasse and revalued the areas's focus on shopping.

Since 2003, construction activity is concentrated around the Neumarkt, 2006, the first quarters were completed (Q1 and Q2, and the Hotel de Saxe in Q4) Q3 2007 was under construction.

Building development and living
Of the medieval and middle-class part of the city with its Renaissance, baroque and period of promoterism buildings exists due to the total destruction in 1945 practically nothing more. Today the Inner old Town consists structurally of 3 components: the sakral and common buildings of cultures in the northern range, the living and business land developments of the 1950/60's within the southern range ("Stalin baroque") and the consolidating buildings of the Post-Change-period. (South side
Altmarkt, Altmarkt-Galerie).

Churches & religious groups
In the Inner Old Town are the three main churches in Dresdens: Frauenkirche, Kreuzkirche und die (ehem.) Hofkirche.

Culture and recreation
In the Inner Old Town are the most significant museums and theatres of Dresden situated, including picture gallery and Semper Opera House.

Shopping and Dining
The Inner Old Town is (again) one of the most important
shopping quarters of Dresden, if not, after the opening of the Altmarkt-Galerie ("old market gallery") and the business on the Seestraße the Shopping quarter. Also around the Altmarkt (old market) and along the road Wilsdruffer Straße are a multiplicity of business, with some which are partially reorganized at the moment.

In the eastern part around the lane Weiße Gasse a new tavern quarter developed in 2002/2004 a further tavern mile very popular with tourists is in the lane are in the Münzgasse between Bruehl terrace and the church Frauenkirche. Besides there are famous single objects e.g. the Italian village.
